Day 28 of “A Screenplay in 30 Days”

With a beautiful day on tap, it’s time for a break from writing GREEN. This is a 30-day marathon, after all. I need to spend this beautiful day, outside — not sitting and definitely not thinking directly about the work. A hike in the woods is in order.

While yesterday was a tougher run than I expected, I encouraged myself to stay on task. Permission to write a ‘shitty’ first draft can come hard, sometimes. As soon as I hit the middle of Act 3, I made my list for today and shutdown my computer. I’m anxious to get back to see how my hero gets out of the even worse predicament that I left him in last night!

Two more days to go. By Tuesday evening, I must complete Act 3 to meet my goal of writing a feature length screenplay in 30 days.

Stay tuned: Last night, I received my poster for IN MIND, a science fiction screenplay that I co-authored with my good friend, Gabe Fremuth. The poster was designed by Chad Bartlett, and it’s awesome. After some announcements are made, we’ll feature the poster on this site.

Countdown 5, 4, 3, 2 …

Yesterday, I reached the end of Act 2 of GREEN. Things couldn’t be going any worse for my hero. He’s been beaten down, and things look really bad. I mean, dire.

I had hit my own wall the day before. The script looked like it was tanking. And not in a good way. But at 3 A.M. I had the ‘fix.’ The words sailed out of my head and on to the page. And so, as scheduled, September 25 marked the beginning of Act 3.

I have five days left to meet my goal of a first draft script in 30 days. The beat sheet for the first half of Act 3 is nearly finished. I don’t even know how my hero is going to get out of the mess he’s in!

A Feature Length Script in 30 Days

I’m working on a new feature length sci-fi screenplay. My goal is to have a solid and coherent first draft in 30 days. I started on September 1, 2014 and expect to pen, FADE OUT, on September 30.

Today (9/20), I passed the mid-point of the script. My hero is taking a breath and recouping for his upcoming challenges.

Next week, I’ll complete Act 2 and begin Act 3. The working title of the script is GREEN, and it introduces a new super hero.

Zero to Sixty Screenwriting Workshop

I will be leading my workshop “Zero to Sixty Screenwriting — Taking Your Short Story to the Screen” at Balticon 48 (www.balticon.org), May 23 – 26, 2014.

This year, the workshop will be held on Friday, May 23 from 9:00 – 11:20 PM.

We’ll have plenty of time for your questions as we weave your story idea into the framework for a screenplay. We’ll also discuss formatting and other resources available to you if you want to take your idea to another level.

While the focus of the workshop is on short film, the material applies to feature length screenplays, as well. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be able to apply skills directly using the workshop supplied workbook.

All of this is available with your Balticon 48 registration. Hope to see you there.
